OPDR, Organisation for Protection of Democratic Rights is formally launched in 1975, April. It is a continuation and dialectical improvement of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Association, 1965. It has well-defined manifesto and constitution. The manifesto declares “Right to Struggle is the fundamental right”of the people. It’s first major activity was a report into state terror against Srikakulam Tribal Peasant Movement, 1969 – ’71. Since then the Organisation published scores of Fact Finding Reports about state and ruling class violation of human rights of toiling masses. OPDR together with some other democratic rights organisations published reports of state repression in Kashmir, Punjab, Orissa, West Bengal. OPDR opposes religious fanaticism, nation, caste and male chauvinism.
The membership is open to all sections of people who ever accepts the manifesto and constitution. It has been publishing a monthly organ ‘JANAPATHAM’, in Telugu since 1991. OPDR disapproves violation of the human rights of the people by armed revolutionary / insurrection groups.
